Workers prepare for action over jobs, pay and services

NEARLY 300,000 members of the PCS civil service union are balloting for national strike action over jobs, pay and privatisation. The ballot began on 2 January and national action is planned to begin with a one-day strike on 31 January, followed by a two-week overtime ban.

Vicious government budget cuts mean that low-paid workers are facing below-inflation pay offers and 100,000 civil and public service jobs are under threat. This is while the government spent a staggering £7.2 billion on management consultants over the last three years.

The ballot closes on 23 January.
