Coventry: Labour Should Feel Worried

OVER 60 Socialist Party members and supporters have delivered 100,000 leaflets for the 14 candidates that we're standing in 12 wards in Coventry's council elections! The supporters included people from the campaign to re-instate a hospital consultant, which we have supported.

Chris Newby

Leafletting, canvassing and campaigning is not only getting our vote out but attracting interest from people who want to find out more about what the Socialist Party stands for.

Whilst campaigning against Post Office closures a young postal worker asked for more information. Two days later he came to a local meeting and agreed to join the party. Three days after that he was out leafletting.

The Labour Party is running scared in St Michaels ward, where Socialist Party councillors Dave Nellist, Karen McKay and Rob Windsor (who are all standing for re-election) are playing a critical part in securing more resources for the area.

At one of our city centre stalls someone complained about our excellent advertising boards, saying "The trouble with Socialist Councillors - is there's not enough of them! Vote Socialist Party." No doubt a political opponent is feeling the heat.

The Labour Party should feel worried judging by the anger people feel both on their local and national policies including the war, cuts in services, and student tuition fees. Compare the response we're getting. Going round the doors you often meet someone who knows Rob, Dave or Karen and supports the work they're doing to help the local community.

Both on the doorstep and on city centre stalls, we're selling many copies of the socialist and our manifesto. We're making every effort to ensure that St Michaels ward still has three Socialist Party councillors on 11 June and that we build our support throughout the city.
