European Social Forum
15-17 October 2004
THE EUROPEAN Social Forum (ESF), meeting in London from 15-17 October, is just a week away. Tens of thousands will converge on Alexandra Palace and Bloomsbury to hear speakers on 'war and peace', 'social justice', 'corporate globalisation', 'racism and the rise of the far right' and many other issues.
Judy Beishon, Socialist Party National Committee
Films, exhibitions, concerts, poetry and drama are promised as well as hundreds of rallies and discussions. The event will end with a large anti-war demonstration on Sunday 17 October, assembling at 1pm in Russell Square.
The ESF's theme is: "Another world is possible", which will raise the question in many minds of what type of other world it should be. The Socialist Party intends to be well seen and heard with the message that it must be a socialist world if all the horrors of capitalism - war, poverty, terror etc - are to be banished forever.
We will be running stalls promoting socialist material and organising a rally with Joe Higgins, the Socialist Party TD (MP) in Southern Ireland as the main guest speaker. We are also hosting a workshop on 'socialism' jointly with the youth organisation International Socialist Resistance.
The ESF presents an opportunity to raise socialist ideas in hundreds of meetings and to discuss with thousands of people interested in alternatives to capitalism. So it is important that every reader of the socialist considers going to participate.
Members of the Socialist Party's European sister parties in the Committee for a Workers' International will also be coming to take part and to speak in our meetings and others.
