Save our school!

Parents and children in Greenwich and Lewisham have launched a campaign to save their school, Charlotte Turner primary, which Greenwich council is threatening to close. The parents contacted Greenwich Unison, where Socialist Party member Onay Kasab is the branch secretary, and have asked for support from the union.

Obviously this was agreed and, on the same day, parents and Onay waited for councillors at the town hall who were on their way in to discuss the closure. The parents made sure that the councillors got the message loud and clear that a campaign had begun to save the school.

The council say that the school is failing. Parents suspect that the closure decision by Greenwich has more to do with the fact that the majority of pupils come from Lewisham. The government's slogan for its policies relating to children is "every child matters". This is obviously only true in Greenwich if the children actually live in Greenwich!

A joint parent/union campaign has now been launched to save the school. Unlike the council, the campaign will not discriminate based on where children come from but will instead unite people from both boroughs.
