Tube strike ballot

AT THE last rail union RMT London Underground regional council, a strike committee was elected. This committee agreed that strike action should be called for mid-April, to fight job cuts, the attack on jobs for life and to oppose management's proposals for a five-year pay deal.

The pay offer is for 1% increase plus RPI (Retail Prices Index) for the first year and RPI for the following four years. In effect, we would be signing up to a pay cut.

At a packed mass meeting in central London last week, stewards and activists unanimously supported our general secretary and union executive's call for a ballot for strike action. This will commence on 20 March. The ballot will be on the issues of jobs, pay and draconian disciplinary procedures.

This strike will be to defend every job and the conditions of our members. Hopefully, it will show other workers that any attacks on the working class can and must be resisted.

John Reid, RMT
