No to racism and fascism

BNP loses council by-election

THE BNP has lost its seat in Brinsley, their only seat on Broxtowe Borough Council, Nottinghamshire. The 30 July by-election was caused by the non-attendance of the former BNP councillor (and now expelled BNP member) Sadie Graham, who has apparently left the area and who it is alleged was involved with the leaking of the BNP's membership list.

The seat was won by the Tories, who had not even stood in 2003 and 2007 and who said it was the first time they had won in that ward. Labour's vote was a disastrous 68, just 6.7% of valid votes cast, coming fourth behind the Tories, BNP and Liberal Democrats.

It was rumoured that Labour asked people to vote Tory. If true, it shows that Labour has no confidence in their ability to beat the BNP.

That a formerly safe Labour seat has been won by the BNP and now the Tories, shows the need for a real alternative for working people to the establishment parties and the racist BNP.

James Newton, Nottinghamshire Stop the BNP

Result: Conservative 416; BNP 288; Liberal Democrat 224; Labour 68 and UKIP 21.
