Fight cuts at Manchester Met

News of 127 job losses among support staff has been met with outrage by the staff and their trade unions at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). Decisive action now by staff, with active support from students, can put pressure on the management to back off.

A rally called on the day of the announcement drew nearly 100 people from the staff and student population. This shows the scope for a campaign, with the unions taking the leading role.

The vice-chancellor (VC) claims jobs must be lost because of future cuts in public spending on universities. Further attacks impend on jobs and resourcing, maybe under the guise of the £7 million budget deficit, or paying for the planned new buildings, or further announcements from the government's review of higher education.

The joint unions at MMU are consulting their members over a vote of no confidence in the VC. The student union should condemn the threats to jobs and organise mass meetings of students for a similar no confidence vote.

The joint unions have called a lobby of the board of governors: Friday 27 November, 12.30pm. Corner of All Saints Park, outside Ormond Building, Oxford Road, Manchester.
