"The promises to guarantee work or training to 16-17 year olds and for all those under 24 after they have suffered six months of unemployment reflect the impact of the criticisms made by Youth Fight for Jobs of schemes like the Future Jobs Fund.
But promises are not enough! There is nothing to suggest that this "work or training" will constitute real jobs and training schemes that are not tools of exploitation used by the bosses and local authorities to use young people as cheap labour or force them to work for free.
The chancellor boasts about unemployment figures having increased less than expected in the last few months.
But in the run to Christmas for workers and young people the jobs slaughter has started.
In Brighton where I live hundreds of workers face losing their jobs in some of the cities largest workplaces such as Sussex University and Lloyds TSB and in retail where young people work at Borders and Threshers.
The CBI employers group have stated that manufacturers will trim production in the next few months.
We can see the results of this with thousands of job losses in industries such as steel in the unemployment black spot of Teesside.
Darling in his speech made a point of saying "no government can save every job" but this government has spent £850 billion to bail out the banks and Darling has set aside £2.8 billion for the war in Afghanistan.
Youth Fight for Jobs asks what about a bail out for workers and young people? Hundreds of thousands of jobs could be saved and real jobs created by increasing funding for public services rather than making savage cuts, and nationalising and retooling industries like Corus and the struggling Ford plant in Dagenham"
