British Airways strike dates set

In a press conference at 11 AM today Len McClusky, Deputy General Secretary of UNITE announced dates for strike action for British Airways cabin staff.

The strike will be held over 7 days in two separate walkouts on 20th March to 22nd March, then from 27th March to 30th March.

Prior to the announcement, BA management put an offer on the table. UNITE will run a consultative ballot with the membership. The results are expected by the middle of next week. UNITE will be recommending the membership reject the offer. Balloting members on an offer in the run up for strike action is highly unusual. Although we can only speculate it is possible UNITE feared BA and the courts would slap another injunction on strike action if they failed to ballot members on this offer.

In his statement Len McClusky said UNITE would be calling on the whole of the labour movement to support cabin crew.

The Socialist Party endorses this and will put its weight behind this call.
