Southampton library staff strike to save jobs

Unison members working in Southampton libraries have voted by 80% in favour of strike action against Tory council plans to close libraries and replace trained librarians with volunteers.

Two library workers spoke to The Socialist about their dispute: "We are set to lose six or seven fulltime staff when we are already down to the bare bones. Originally volunteers were to be in addition to staff, now they want to run some libraries just with volunteers.

"Millbrook library is threatened with closure as part of a 'regeneration' scheme despite the huge opposition of the local community. With very few services left in the area if the library goes, it means the end of a lot of activities based there.

"Tory Councillor Hannides has said no one wants the libraries when they are 'consulted', but 700 parents have supported our petition. Our members are very determined to save jobs and services, union membership is up 50% as a result of the campaign. We are appealing to everyone to exert pressure on the council, support our campaign and stop these cuts."

Library staff will be striking on Monday 21 June and holding a rally at Central Library, Southampton at 12.30pm.
