"ABANDONED BY Labour, working people need a political voice. This event is an important stage in addressing the crisis of political representation and reasserting the case for socialism", said Chris Baugh, assistant secretary of the civil servants' union PCS (in a personal capacity).

The campaign for a New Workers' Party (CNWP) conference on 12 May will bring together trade unionists and community and environmental campaigners who want to see a new mass workers' party built in England and Wales.

There will be discussions on building an electoral alternative to the big three capitalist parties, combating the far-right BNP, fighting to break the trade union link with New Labour, and much more.

Postal workers from Burslem will be speaking at the conference. These workers have had to take 12 days' strike action so far to demand the reinstatement of sacked and victimised postal worker Dave Condliffe.

JANE MELLALIEU, one of the Burslem strikers, explains why she is coming:

"I'm attending this conference because I've been waiting decades for this to happen because I've totally lost faith in the Labour Party. They are wolves in sheep's clothing."

ONAY KASAB, Greenwich UNISON branch secretary, (speaking in a personal capacity) explains why he and other members of his branch are also attending the conference:

"UNISON workers in Greenwich face pay cuts while bosses and Labour councillors help themselves to huge rises in their salaries and allowances. While we prepare for action our union leaders are handing millions of pounds to the party that stabs us in the back, the front and the side. That is why I am proud to attend and speak at this conference, and why other members of Greenwich UNISON will also be coming."

The coronavirus crisis has laid bare the class character of society in numerous ways. It is making clear to many that it is the working class that keeps society running, not the CEOs of major corporations.

The results of austerity have been graphically demonstrated as public services strain to cope with the crisis.

The government has now ripped up its 'austerity' mantra and turned to policies that not long ago were denounced as socialist. But after the corona crisis, it will try to make the working class pay for it, by trying to claw back what has been given.

The Socialist Party's material is more vital than ever, so we can continue to report from workers who are fighting for better health and safety measures, against layoffs, for adequate staffing levels, etc.
When the health crisis subsides, we must be ready for the stormy events ahead and the need to arm workers' movements with a socialist programme - one which puts the health and needs of humanity before the profits of a few.

Inevitably, during the crisis we have not been able to sell the Socialist and raise funds in the ways we normally would.
