Ryan Hall, Socialist Party Devon and Newton Abbot town councillor

An alternative to Starmer's Labour is needed now more than ever. 28 people, including current and ex-Labour members, councillors, and a former Labour parliamentary candidate attended the online launch of Devon Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition's (TUSC) local election challenge on 1 February.

Dave Nellist introduced the discussion by outlining TUSC, its history and aims to the meeting. We need TUSC councillors across the country to fight cuts implemented by Tories and Labour, supporting strikes and being a voice for the working class in the council chambers.

As a councillor myself, who has just left the Labour Party, I am looking forward to standing as a TUSC candidate, and campaigning with others across Devon.

Since the successful launch of TUSC in Devon, another current Labour councillor and a former Labour parliamentary candidate have come forward interested in standing for TUSC on a socialist program. When the elections come, we are ready!

Finance appeal

The coronavirus crisis has laid bare the class character of society in numerous ways. It is making clear to many that it is the working class that keeps society running, not the CEOs of major corporations.

The results of austerity have been graphically demonstrated as public services strain to cope with the crisis.

The government has now ripped up its 'austerity' mantra and turned to policies that not long ago were denounced as socialist. But after the corona crisis, it will try to make the working class pay for it, by trying to claw back what has been given.

Inevitably, during the crisis we have not been able to sell the Socialist and raise funds in the ways we normally would.

We therefore urgently appeal to all our viewers to click here to donate to our Fighting Fund.
