Northern Rock and Branson’s present

Liverpool ’47’ and Socialist Party member Tony Mulhearn has sent the following letter to the Liverpool Echo:

The festive season is here again. What Do You Give A Man Who Has Everything?

The latest Con-Dem jape is to con the long suffering taxpayer who will stump up £13 a head to give Richard Branson the ‘good’ part of Northern Rock which was rescued by the last government. No wonder his grin is wider than ever as he squats on his Caribbean island.

Exposed yet again is the obscenity of the Con-Dem cuts programme.

The government has gifted Branson the ‘good’ part of Northern Rock at a loss of at least £400 million while keeping the ‘bad’ bits with the toxic packages.

Anything involving public accountability is thrown away lest it interferes with their rich friends’ complete freedom to make as much money as possible with little regard for the public good.

And what do you give to people who have very little? The Liverpool Echo reports in the same edition as Ian Hernon’s accurate observations on Northern Rock, you close down a Sure Start facility in Hunts Cross which is desperately needed by the community (Echo 21 November).

This toadying to the obscenely rich while taking from those who can least afford it demands opposition to all cuts both locally and nationally.

The TUC’s formidable show of industrial strength on 30 November must be the first major step in a campaign to ensure that the present gang of millionaires are despatched into the dustbin of history.
