Hillsborough verdict – a magnificent testimony to courage and fortitude

A news release from Merseyside Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) – 26 April 2016

Merseyside TUSC applauds the brilliant verdict that the Hillsborough victims were unlawfully killed as well as completely exonerating the fans from any responsibility for the catastrophe. Congratulations are due to the families of the 96 for their unstinting campaign to secure justice. The verdict is a magnificent testimony to their courage and fortitude.

It confirms the views held by the campaigners for 27 years that there was a catastrophic failure of those responsible for crowd safety.

The victims and their families were subject to a sustained campaign of lies and vilification by the media, the police and other agencies of the state.

The South Yorkshire police played a particularly pernicious role in falsifying police accounts of events as they did during the miners’ strike.

TUSC Liverpool mayoral candidate Roger Bannister said:

“A debt of honour is owed to the families for exposing the web of lies and distortion which was used to defend those responsible for the catastrophe, who should now be brought to book.”
